About Jump Rope Girl
Jump Rope Girl is the story of 11-year-old Frannie’s pivotal year when she and her family move to yet another new town. As an older teen, she recounts how she navigated that period in hopes of finding a way to thrive.
A part of Frannie that follows her wherever she goes is her French heritage. Watch her discover more about herself as she explores her ancestral language, cuisine, history and attitudes and starts getting to know the people around her. See her world expand. Are you in touch with the colors, personalities and pathways from where your family came? Or, do you (or others you know) prefer homogeneity, leaving the past behind? (Note: hopefully anyone answering ‘yes’ to the last question doesn’t like sushi, croissants and pizza!)
Have you ever moved to a place where you didn’t know anyone or where the people in the new location had different values or customs from what you were used to? In Frannie’s new town, the people playing jump rope at recess each day fascinate her. She wants to be a part of this enticing group, but no one is exactly welcoming her much so she opts to occupy the sidelines as patiently as she can while settling into her new surroundings.
Have you ever hoped for something when things seemed hard? What would help get you through that period? Frannie knows what it’s like to want to be in a better place. Luckily, she manages to get through some tough periods by holding onto little dreams dear to her heart. Once you have read the book, would you let the author know if you could relate to Frannie’s story? If you look around, do you see little dreams of your own that became real?
